THE Director of Communication for the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape, Siyanda Manana, has confirmed that the department acknowledges the infrastructural challenges facing Tsomo Clinic in Tsomo.
He stated that the facility currently used as a clinic was originally a tavern, which was handed over by the owner to the community for use as a healthcare facility.
However, it has insufficient space and operates within a very small structure.
“It has three consulting rooms, but two of them do not have windows, thus compromising infection control protocols.
“The department has plans to improve the facility. Infrastructure upgrades for Tsomo Clinic are scheduled for the 2025/2026–2027/2028 period.
“A budget of R985 000.00 has been allocated for the project, which includes electrical work, fencing, roadways, site signage, sewerage, septic servicing for the guardhouse, pit latrines, stormwater drainage, solar panels, waiting areas and solid waste management,” he said.
He added that, due to financial constraints, the department has prioritised infrastructure improvements on existing structures.
Despite the challenges, services at the clinic continue without compromise.
The former chairperson for Tsomo Clinic, Norman Mngqibisa, expressed that these upgrades would bring much-needed relief, as the current clinic building is very small.
“There is not enough space, and it was previously used as a tavern. However, the owner saw the struggles of the community and decided to donate it.
“We have repeatedly requested the government to extend the clinic because it serves many villages under Tsomo.
“We would be very happy if the government helped us. In the past, we had to travel far to access healthcare services.
“We hope that a competent construction company will be hired to complete the project properly,” said Mngqibisa.
He added that many projects in their area have failed because some people do not want them to have improved facilities.
Mngqibisa confirmed that the clinic committee would play a major role in ensuring that the facility is maintained in good condition.
