CAPE TOWN – Provincial police detectives are investigating a case of triple murder and three attempted murders following a shooting incident in Lingelethu West on Wednesday 27 May.
Provincial police spokesperson Col Andre Traut confirmed the incident, stating that at approximately 18:00, Lingelethu West officers responded to reports of a shooting at the SD informal settlement in Mew Way, Khayelitsha.

“Upon arrival at the scene, members discovered the bodies of three men who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. One victim was found outside the shack, while two others were found inside the residence, where they had reportedly been seated at the time of the attack. Three additional victims who sustained gunshot wounds survived the incident and were transported to a medical facility for treatment,” explained Traut.

Extortion angle explored as possible motive
He said the motive for the attack has not yet been confirmed and forms part of the ongoing investigation. However, extortion-related activities are being explored as a possible motive.
Experienced detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are pursuing all available leads in an effort to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. Traut added that, at this stage, two unknown men are being sought in connection with the incident.
In addition to the investigation, operational forces have been deployed in the area to stabilise the situation and ensure increased police visibility within the affected community.
Lingelethu Community Policing Forum chairperson Lunga Guza described the incident as horrific and urged the community to work together with police to fight crime.

“As a CPF, we are always concerned whenever these kinds of incidents occur in our communities. We are saying enough is enough. We encourage all community stakeholders to come on board and support our campaign to silence the guns in our societies,” said Guza.
