TO educate and empower women of all ages on personal safety, security systems company, Fidelity ADT, hosted a self-defence workshop and offered safety tips to local women at Aston Bay Community Hall, Jeffreys Bay, on July 18.
Bernadette Nel-Naude, Gqeberha branch manager for Fidelity ADT, said that with crime against women rife in South Africa they have found it imperative to empower women, not only on what to do in dangerous situations, but also on how to avoid getting into these types of situations.
“It is our responsibility as the protectors of our community to create these platforms to empower the women of our country,” said Nel-Naude.
She said the programme offered by Fidelity ADT throughout the Eastern Cape has continued to empower women of any fitness level and any background for almost eight years.
Nel-Naude said the first part of the workshop focuses on empowering women on what to look out for and how to avoid being victims of crime.
“Emphasis is put on awareness of your surroundings, trusting your instincts, and not putting yourself in a position to be potentially victimised,” said Nel-Naude.
She said the self-defence workshop in Aston Bay helped to teach participants very important, practical ways of defending themselves against would-be attackers.
Nel-Naude said that the workshop focuses on your “everyday woman” and does not comprise of any specific type of martial arts.
Instead, she said they made use of easy, basic manoeuvres that will assist women in getting them out of specific situations and holds.
“Thank you to everyone who attended and helped with the event. We hope that projects like these can help the people of our region keep safe from crime,” says Nel-Naude.
