After being separated from the beach for over 20 years, Bettie Smit (81) is making up for lost time as she spends as much time as she can enjoying the waves flowing over her.

This is thanks to her son, Braam Smit, who makes it a priority to take his mother to Point Beach in Jeffreys Bay often.

Braam said his mother lived in Pretoria for many years.

In April last year she moved in with Braam and his family at their home in Wavecrest.

Since Bettie moved to Jeffreys Bay, Braam has made it his mission to take his mother to the beach at least two to three times a month.

He said when his mother was younger she was a strong swimmer and always loved swimming.

Since Bettie was unable to visit the beach for many years, moving to Jeffreys Bay has afforded her the opportunity to visit the nearby beaches as often as she can.

“My mum has a bad right knee and walks with a walking stick as she struggles to walk on her own,” said Braam.

“I help her get to the water where she loves to sit and enjoy the waves flowing over her.”

Bettie said she spent a great deal of time at the beach when she was younger.

After being away from the beach for so many years, Bettie said she loves staying in Jeffreys Bay and enjoys the fresh air.

“The sea water helps me feel good and relaxed,” said Bettie.
