HUMANSDORP – Humansdorp police in the Eastern Cape have confirmed that no arrests have been made yet after a Grade 12 learner was fatally stabbed at Humansdorp Senior Secondary School this morning, 23 September.
As previously reported, on 23 September at about 08:15, a violent altercation at the school among learners left an 18-year-old learner with stab wounds.
The learner was declared dead at the scene.
Contrary to some media reports, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli has confirmed that no arrests have been made, but a few learners have been taken in for questioning.
Horatio Hendricks, Democratic Alliance Eastern Cape Shadow MEC for Education, has extended his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the learner who so tragically passed away.
He further said that the DA is appalled by these acts of violence, which have no place in any society, let alone our schools.
“Our schools have become breeding grounds for criminality and havens for gang activity, and this cannot be allowed to continue,” said Hendricks.
He alleges that Humansdorp Secondary School has been plagued by gangsterism and drug abuse over the past few years and that the situation is no longer tolerable.
Hendricks has urged the SAPS to act urgently to bring those responsible for this tragedy to justice, to apply the full might of the law, and to send a clear message that violence in schools will not be tolerated.
