In a tragic incident that has left the Thornhill community reeling, the 20-year-old Thokozani January, a talented footballer for Thornhill Uprising Stars FC, was stabbed 12 times in a brutal attack that has forever altered his life. Thokozani, known for his role as a defender in the local football club, is now facing a challenging recovery journey after losing his right leg due to the severity of his injuries.
The team organised a heart-warming tribute to the footballer as Thornhill Uprising Stars FC has retired his jersey number 5, following the attack on his life.
January, who joined the club in 2021 as a defender, has become a symbol of resilience within the Thornhill community, inspiring many with his strength despite the challenges he now faces.
The jersey retirement ceremony, organised by Thornhill Uprising Stars, was more than just a farewell to a cherished player; it was a celebration of his contributions to the club and a testament to the support of his teammates and community.
Founder of the club, Ziyanda Kilimani, said, “This was our way of honouring January’s journey with us and showing him that having one leg does not mean his story ends here.”
In a symbolic gesture, Kilimani announced that the number 5 jersey would be reserved exclusively for members of the January family.
“We are retiring jersey number 5, but it remains open for any member of the January family who joins Thornhill Uprising Stars FC. January’s legacy will live on through them,” she explained, emphasising the club’s commitment to keeping his memory alive on the field.
The farewell event received strong support from community leaders, fellow players, and the wider football community. The notable attendees included motivational speaker Pumela Mdolo, Ward Councillor Eric Mbuqu, and Asanda Kobese from Uprising Aces FC, all of whom came to celebrate January’s journey and contributions.
Kilimani added, “Having one leg is not the end of your life. We as the club offer you a position to be in the club’s management by being an U/13 coach, as you will then put your football knowledge to good use.”
The club will also help January raise funds next year to get a prosthetic leg, as the quotation valued the prosthetic at R120 000.
