KOUGA – The second phase of Kouga Local Municipality’s gravel road upgrade project is set to launch later this month, September 2025.

A total of 20 gravel roads, spanning close to 6km, will be tarred over the next 18 months at a projected cost of R24.5 million, funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).

Phase 2 will benefit communities in Hankey (Rosedale), Loerie, Jeffreys Bay (Madiba Bay and Ocean View), Humansdorp (Arcadia, Kruisfontein, and KwaNomzamo), and St Francis Bay (Sea Vista).

This development follows the successful completion of Phase 1, during which more than 7.5km of gravel roads were tarred. Areas that benefited include Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, and Thornhill.

“Road infrastructure remains one of the municipality’s four key priorities, reinforcing its commitment to improving service delivery and enhancing the quality of life for all residents,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman.

“By upgrading our road network, we are not only enhancing daily travel conditions but also unlocking economic opportunities, attracting investment, and enabling local businesses to thrive. Well-maintained roads are essential for the efficient delivery of services, the safety of motorists and pedestrians, and the overall growth of our local economy.

“This expansion demonstrates our ongoing commitment to building a connected, safe, and economically vibrant Kouga for today and for future generations.”
