SIX learners from different communities in the Kouga District were recently announced as the winners of a competition by The Kouga Wind Farm Community Develop Trust (KWFCDT) relating to Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The winners were asked to create a poster or write a poem about GBV and won a tablet and starter -pack each.

The poster winners are: Cartly Potgieter (St Patrick’s Primary School), Harshall Kettledas (Sandwater Primary School), Nande Duma (Kruisfontein Primary School) and Janiqua Jantjies from Sea Vista Primary School.

The two learners that won in the poetry category are Faith McCabe from Humansdorp Secondary School and Hauoang Ranketse from Lungiso Public School.

During the handover of the prizes, Trevor Arosi from Kouga Wind Farm (KWF), said that the tablets will help learners develop their ICT competency, but mostly with doing their schoolwork as they can download the whole syllabus.

“The tablets will help the learners throughout their schooling years and also advance their studies,” Boniswa Orleyn, from the Bophelo Mpilo Development Centre (BIDC), added.

The KWFCDT commemorated the 16 days of Activism Campaign against GBV by carrying out activations and gender-based awareness campaigns, sharing knowledge and educating communities through training and dialogues.

These activations started off with changing your profile picture on social media to orange, with the themes: #Leave no one behind, #End violence against women and girls and #Orange the world.

According to a media statement released by KWF, the Sakhe Singamadoda Youth Programmes also held a campaign to promote gender equality and development through a Men’s March and Dialogue, where men discussed and identified efforts to end the scourge of GBV in the community of Kruisfontein.

“The purpose of the dialogue was to create space for men to engage and define their role in the fight against GBV. An information sharing session was also held and self-defence classes offered for young girls and women,” the statement read.
