Four alleged copper thieves were denied bail after they briefly appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, January 28.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli,
police arrested the four suspects on the N2 road near Humansdorp on Wednesday,
January 27, at about 15:00, for the alleged possession of suspected stolen
property (copper) and seized a vehicle allegedly used in transporting the
goods.

Nkohli said it is further said that police acted on
information about a white Toyota Avanza from Humansdorp that was carrying
stolen copper travelling to Port Elizabeth. 

“Members spotted a vehicle fitting the description
travelling on the N2 road near Humansdorp and pulled it off the road,” said
Nkohli.

“The four occupants, Nomthandazo Persent (38), Matshawandile
Nxati (38), Mark van Wyk (32) and Siphamandla Majola (28) were arrested in
possession of copper valued over R150 000.”

He said it is believed that the copper was stolen from the
municipal cultural centre in Humansdorp. 

“A vehicle was confiscated for further investigation,” said
Nkohli.

“The four suspects will remain in custody until Tuesday,
February 2, where they will reappear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court for a
bail application.
