WAVE Point church, under the leadership of Pastors Cjay and Natalie Jansen, was launched in 2019, with a vision of creating a place where people feel that they belong, can connect with Jesus, and are empowered to change their world.
In 2020, at the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic, they started the Wave Point Foundation, which is the social justice arm of Wave Point Church.
The Wave Point Foundation is a non-profit organisation that aims at giving both youth and adults from more disadvantaged communities around Jeffreys Bay a better chance at living life to the full!
“We aim to do this through encouraging a balanced, healthy and Christ-centred life-style, creating opportunities to truly lift themselves out of a poverty mindset and positively impact their families, relationships and broader community,” says pastor Cjay Jansen.
One of the projects is The Wave Point Surf Leadership Programme. It was born out of a need to identify and develop future leaders using surfing and skating as a tool and vehicle.
It is a leadership programme that focuses on leadership, relationships, a sense of belonging and surfing.
“Our goal is to develop every surfer’s character and establishing their God-given purpose and vision for life.”
Thirty to 40 girls and boys attend three sessions a week focused on education, surfing and skating. The education sessions focus on leadership skills, the importance and development of integrity, and discovering and establishing identity, future dreams and tenacity.
The surf and skate sessions focus on mental and physical well-being and pro-social behaviour.
“John Maxwell said, ‘Leadership is influence and that everything rises and falls on leadership.’ If we want to influence society and change our nation for the better then we need to raise leaders with empathy, integrity, courage, respect and good character.”
The church hosted their first ever surf awards on December 5, when they celebrated and honoured all of the children who were part of the programme this year, including an award for the surfer of the year.
