JEFFREYS BAY – Supertubes now has a new symbol of pride. A striking sign has been unveiled at the site, celebrating both Jeffreys Bay’s surfing heritage and the local artistry that helped create it.

The project, led by the JBay Surf Alliance (JBSA) in partnership with the Kouga Municipality, forms part of an ongoing effort to protect and beautify the town’s beaches and public spaces.

For JBSA, caring for our town’s natural treasures means more than preservation; it’s about creating places that reflect the heart and spirit of the community.

At the centre of the new sign are two remarkable local talents: craftsman Robbie Ponting and the late artist Stephen Bibb.

Robbie’s innovative bamboo structure has transformed what could have been a simple marker into a piece of enduring functional art.

Traditional materials such as steel or wood would struggle against the coastal elements, but the bamboo-inspired design promises to last for decades with little maintenance.

“Robbie is one of the most talented craftsmen in the world,” says Cheron, co-founder of JBSA. “His understanding of materials and his craftsmanship are exceptional; it’s a privilege to know him.”

Adding an emotional layer to the project is the sign’s artwork, the final painting by Stephen Bibb, one of Jeffreys Bay’s most loved artists.

Known for capturing the soul of JBay through surfboards, murals and clothing designs, Bibb’s work has long reflected the town’s creative heartbeat. He completed the Supertubes artwork just days before his passing.

The collaboration between Robbie and Stephen has left behind a lasting legacy, a landmark that now welcomes locals and visitors alike with both beauty and meaning.

“Supertubes is precious,” says Cheron. “We must look after it.”

The new sign, proudly reading “Welcome to Supertubes Jeffreys Bay”, is more than a greeting. It stands as a reminder of what makes this place extraordinary: its waves, its creativity and the community that calls it home.

Beyond the artistry, the project reflects a broader purpose. JBSA and the Kouga Municipality continue to work hand in hand to maintain beaches, parks and dunes, while raising awareness about conservation.
