The Tsitsikamma Community Wind Farm (Wind Farm), located at Wittekleibosch Farm in Tsitsikamma, is committed to driving socio-economic and rural enterprise development in communities within a 50km radius of the wind farm.

Through their efforts they have had a significant impact on the people and small businesses of the Tsitsikamma community.

Sindiswa Speelman, Community Development manager, said the wind farm supported four women from the Wittekleibosch community to start a poultry project, later known as NNT Women Poultry.

She said that the wind farm support on the project included business registration and compliance, infrastructure development, a vehicle for product transportation, skills development on business and finance management, communication, and operations management.

The project began in 2020 and progress was adversely affected by COVID-19. In 2021 the project regained momentum, and in April 2022 a business deal and partnership were secured with Quantum Foods, owners of Nulaid Eggs.

“The partnership saw Quantum Foods donating 1 670 birds which were groomed and nurtured in the project for the laying of quality eggs; additionally Quantum Foods committed to being a customer of the female-owned project,” said Speelman.

“The business has been going very well, with the project supplying an average of 30 000 dozen eggs to Nulaid for the year 2022.”

She said that the project is currently under construction for expansion, as Nulaid has increased demand.

Speelman said that the new structure will enable the project to accommodate at least 4 000 birds, which is an increase from 1 670.
