THE SPCA Assisi, in Humansdorp recently launched their book café, which will allow the public to view their beautiful facilities and animals and raise much needed funds for their facility, as well as their various community outreach programmes.

According to Louise Bakkes, who has been responsible for logistics at SPCA Assisi, since the establishment of SPCA Assisi in 1996, they have continued to build on the foundation laid by a few hardworking pioneers.

Bakkes, who also runs SPCA Assisi’s charity shop at the facility which caters for the surrounding community, said they currently have 35 dog kennels of which eight are kept for boarders and seven cat kennels.

In addition, the facility has 26 dogs and 34 cats waiting to be adopted.

Every Wednesday, SPCA Assisi embarks on outreach services in which the surrounding community can visit their office to dip, deworm or powder their animals.

Furthermore, they do planned outreaches throughout the Kouga area in which they serve the community with their dipping station.

“The outreach programmes pose an excellent opportunity to educate on pet care,” said Bakkes.

SPCA Assisi is fully South African Veterinary Council certified and has an approved clinic with a contracting veterinarian, Dr Ardre Kriel, who is available at the facility twice a week.

In a bid to raise funds for their facility, their various outreach programmes and in turn open their doors to allow the community to view their beautiful facilities and animals, the SPCA Assisi recently launched their book café which saw at least 40 guests in attendance with some of their ‘fur kids’.

“The book café provides a morning of like-minded animal lovers getting together over coffee, tea and a sweet nibble, with the option of purchasing a book or two. In addition, the book café provides an opportunity for locals to see what the SPCA is all about and view us in action,” said Bakkes.

She said to keep the book café interesting and fresh they will host the book café on the first Saturday of each month with a different theme.

The event will be advertised on Facebook with an RSVP date for catering purposes.

At the next event, on March 6, Bakkes said Leon Nel, head of the K9 SAPS Dog Unit in Humansdorp, will be their special guest and he will demonstrate obedience and handling of animals.

“It would be great if visitors could bring their children to the event to watch the professionals in action,” said Bakkes.

“We have a diverse library. Supporting our book sale will generate much needed income to support our efforts to curb cruelty and neglect on animals in the area.”

Bakkes said her hope was that the SPCA book café would become a highlight on people’s calendars and would grow exponentially.

“I would like people to know that not only will their donations directly benefit the animals in our area, but through sharing agreement between all SPCAs nationwide a portion will be used in the less fortunate areas to benefit animals over a wider area,” said Bakkes.
