The local branch of the South African Weather Service has issued an impact warning of a probability of severe thunderstorms in parts of the Eastern Cape tomorrow, March 5.
The areas to be affected are Kouga and Kou-Kamma Municipalities. The Orange Level 5 warning (medium likelihood of significant impacts) is valid for Sunday from 16:00 until 23:00.
An upper air cut-off low, a deep surface trough and a ridging surface high is expected to result in scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers over the province, with severe thunderstorms resulting in flooding, damage to property and danger to life expected. The onshore southerly winds are expected to enhance heavy downpours along the south coast.
According to the forecast desk, the combination of damaging winds, hail and lightning is expected to result in general damage to infrastructure, informal and/or formal settlements.
“This might pose danger to life especially in populated areas. Disruptions to municipal and other services can be expected. The heavy downpours are expected to result in flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges and possibly causing major traffic disruptions and incidents.”
Residents are advised to stay indoors and away from metal objects if possible.
“Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are a good conductor of electricity. Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds and/or heavy downpours that can accompany the storms.
