Eskom is cautioning Eastern Cape-based residents about a recent scam involving people impersonating Eskom staff/contractors.
The scammers call Eskom customers and claim to be instructed by Eskom to disconnect electricity due to overuse.
Their aim is to gain access to customers’ homes.
According to a media statement released by Eskom, their staff and contractors always carry a work-order number specific to that house and an Eskom-issued identification card.
In addition, both Eskom employees and contractors drive clearly branded cars.
“Any suspicious behaviour must be reported to the city’s law enforcement agencies or to the police.
“Customers should check the identification card before allowing anyone onto their property.
“Even when an ID is produced, customers are asked to never use a different bank account besides the one on their invoices for payments or make cash payments to any Eskom personnel,” the statement read.
