With the goal of asserting state authority and ensuring a safer festive season, various multi-disciplinary operations, including roadblocks, were carried out recently in the Sarah Baartman District.

SAPS, in collaboration with Eastern Cape Provincial Traffic, Local Municipal Traffic, the Department of Transport, and the Department of Health, deployed forces in the district’s hotspots. This resulted in the arrest of 16 drivers under the influence of alcohol and 14 suspects for drug-related offences.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy, “On 17 December, two major roadblocks were held; the first along the R72 near Port Alfred and the second on the R67 near Makhanda.”

The following successes were recorded for both roadblocks:

• More than 1,000 motor vehicles were stopped and checked for outstanding warrants of arrest, driver compliance, and vehicle roadworthiness.

• Traffic fines amounting to R26,200 were issued under the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996.

• Twenty warrants of arrest were resolved after motorists opted to pay fines on the spot, resulting in a total collection of R16,350.

• Additionally, 16 motorists were arrested for drink-driving, and 14 suspects were apprehended for drug-related offences.Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka, has warned motorists not to drink while driving.

“We have a zero-tolerance approach on all our roads. As we approach these public holidays, the intensity of the operations is going to increase, so as to avoid deaths on our public roads,”
