ONE of the best ways to explore the beauty of Kouga’s pristine fynbos shrubland and rugged hills is on a quad bike. JBay Quad Rides in Kabeljauws, just outside Jeffreys Bay, owned by John Brook, offers this adventurous opportunity to ride through breathtaking landscapes, while taking in the views of the distant ocean and wind farms, and enjoying a visit to a hidden waterfall.

Safety first

These guided tours begin with a comprehensive safety briefing, giving participants a thorough demonstration of how to operate the quads. Participants are instructed to accelerate smoothly, much like sipping hot coffee – go too fast, and you could get burned. Along with this, participants receive valuable tips on handling both inclines and declines. One key reminder is to resist the urge to use one’s feet to steer back onto the track – a natural instinct that can be hard to ignore when facing rugged terrain. With safety glasses on (helmets optional for those over 18) and their newfound knowledge, participants embark on a few practice laps to get their bearings. Then it is time to hit the trail.

Hit the trail

With Brook leading the way, participants set off on their main ride. As they navigate the terrain, intermittent stops provide fascinating insights into the local environment. Participants learn about the area’s rich history, the distant wind farms, and the chamomile flowers (used to make tea) thriving after recent rains. The fynbos, a hallmark of the region, adds a splash of colour and uniqueness to the journey. Brook also shares stories of the surrounding farms and their activities, introduces participants to the medicinal sour fig, and points out the zipline that is no longer in use. He even explains the geological marvels encountered, such as the conglomerate formations – sedimentary rocks formed from the natural cementing of pebbles and cobbles, shaped by river and ocean action. The cementing agents that fill the spaces to form the solid rock conglomerate are silica, calcite, or iron oxides. Participants can admire the river’s winding path and marvel at a rock formation resembling a baboon.

Waterfall

The quads then roar towards the waterfall at Jan se Gat, where the view is nothing short of spectacular.

Here, participants can unwind, take a swim, or even enjoy a foefie slide ride if they are brave enough. They also pass by beehives and an overgrown model car racing track, remnants of past interests.

On the way back, participants observe vegetable gardens and spot shy bucks peeking through the bushes, adding a touch of wildlife to the thrilling quad biking adventure.

A thrilling adventure to remember

From the breathtaking scenery and rich history to the thrill of the ride itself, JBay Quad Rides delivers an unforgettable experience.

Whether participants are adrenaline junkies or first-timers, this adventure promises a perfect blend of fun, exploration, and discovery.

With the wind in their hair, the sun on their back, and the beauty of nature all around, it is an outdoor adventure that leaves them craving more.
