A RECORD number of COVID-19 infections were confirmed in the Kouga region for November.

According to the latest report from the Department of Health, a total of 1 182 Kouga residents tested positive for coronavirus during November.

“This is considerably more than the number of cases we had in June and July during the first wave,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks.

A total of 514 and 788 cases were confirmed in the region during June and July respectively. Hendricks said the coronavirus was hitting closer to home for many people.

“Now, more than ever, we all need to play our part to flatten the curve ahead of the upcoming festive season,” he said. “If at all possible, we would like to encourage residents to stay at home unless they have to go to work or shop for essentials.

“Avoid social gatherings for now, even if they are permitted in terms of the national regulations.”

He said 110 disaster management volunteers had been deployed to hotspot areas to encourage residents to comply with basic COVID-19 safety precautions.

“The highest prevalence is in Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay, but the numbers in most of our other towns have also been climbing,” he cautioned.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in the Kouga region totalled 350 on November 30. The cumulative number of cases confirmed since the start of the outbreak stood at 3 176, including 2 771 recoveries and 55 deaths.
