HUMANSDORP – The unwavering commitment of an off-duty police officer resulted in the arrest of a taxi driver for the illegal possession of a firearm and the recovery of a firearm and ammunition.
According to police spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy, information in police records indicates that on 30 September at about 21:00, an off-duty police officer attached to Hankey SAPS witnessed a quarrel amongst taxi drivers.
He noticed that one of the taxi drivers had a firearm in his possession.
McCarthy said that the off-duty member called for backup.
Minutes later, the suspect got into a white Suzuki sedan and drove off in the direction of Humansdorp.
“Members gave chase and spotted the white Suzuki sedan in Humansdorp, where the vehicle was stopped and searched,” said McCarthy.
He said that the taxi driver was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, and the loaded weapon found in his possession was confiscated.
McCarthy said that the suspect is due to appear before the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
