It was a celebration of note with much laughter, love and fanfare when Oasis FM, stationed in Jeffreys Bay, turned two recently.
Despite all the regulations the guests had to adhere to due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those present were elated to see familiar faces and to chatter away.
Owners André and Bernadette (Berni) Swartz started the proceedings, which included an extensive programme, a meal and jovial speeches. They reminisced about how they started out – with almost nothing – and where they are today: bringing the community to unity by being the voice of the people.
Hattingh Bornman, Speaker: Kouga Municipality, says about the municipality’s relationship with the radio station, that he encountered Oasis FM the first time when he saw their application in the office of the erstwhile mayor, the late Elza van Lingen.
“The vision of this radio station resonated with us since the municipality execute practical things, much as Oasis FM envisions – which is to bring communities together.”
Bornman added, “There has been a vast shift over the past twenty years when spiritual oppression was tangible, but their message through the airwaves has played a key part in showing God’s love to the communities. Oasis FM is more than a radio station; it is a movement that unites our people.”
André Swartz makes it clear that there is so much false news on the air, which impacts on people’s minds, that this station has the responsibility to bring them the truth.
“This is not a two-man show. As a community we stand together to make a change – together with pastors, NGOs and volunteers,” says Berni.
Pastor Mercy Cwayi livened up the night with her witticisms as she presented the lucky draws. There were prizes galore sponsored by local businesses, including mall vouchers, treatment, packages, etc.
The glib-tongued Vernel Levendal (YWAM) auctioned off items ranging from helicopter rides to spa packages and from paintings to adventures for family fun. The bidding was energetic and exuberant as everyone participated to raise funds for Oasis.
