JEFFREYS BAY – The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 37 in Jeffreys Bay has opened applications for its next intake of volunteer trainees, calling on committed residents to join its ranks.

Franco Megannon, NSRI Station 37 Crew Member and Social Media Coordinator, described sea rescue as a demanding discipline that requires more than enthusiasm, with a strong emphasis placed on stability and long-term dedication to the Jeffreys Bay community.
He said that the station is specifically seeking mature individuals who are permanently based in the area and able to respond to emergency callouts when needed.
Megannon said that the organisation has identified key traits among its most effective volunteers.
” We have found that our most effective volunteers are those who are established in their careers and personal lives, with the intention of remaining in Jeffreys Bay for years to come,” said Megannon.
He said that applicants are expected to demonstrate permanence in the area, availability for weekly training and emergency response, and the maturity required to operate in high-pressure situations.
Megannon further said that while prior experience, such as a valid First Aid Level 3 certificate, maritime knowledge, or a background in emergency services, is considered advantageous, it is not a requirement.
He said that the selection process is rigorous, with participation in the crew regarded as a privilege that carries high standards.
Megannon said that interested individuals are required to complete an online application form, after which successful candidates will be invited for a formal interview to assess their suitability. He encouraged those who met the criteria to apply, highlighting the importance of commitment within the team.
“Join a team where your experience counts and your commitment saves lives,” said Megannon.
