The replacement of the 11kV medium voltage cable which sustained damage during a period of loadshedding is progressing smoothly, promising an enhanced power supply to residents in C-Place.

With over 300m of cable already successfully installed, Kouga Municipality is employing in-house resources for this project, a groundbreaking move for the municipality.

Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman, emphasised the critical nature of this project, highlighting its mission to reinstate the ring-feed into C-Place, which was disrupted due to a malfunction in the protection relay system.

Moreover, this project goes beyond mere replacement, as it included an upgrade to accommodate a higher electrical load.

“This enhancement significantly reduces downtime in the area,” said Bornman.

“The previous 35mm cable has been substituted with a robust 120mm cable, amplifying the capacity and reliability of our electrical network. Consequently, it guarantees an improved power supply for both residents and businesses in the area.”

Bornman said that this project is primarily carried out using internal resources, including dedicated employees and equipment, predominantly during weekends.

This approach has proven to be cost-effective for our electrical operational budget, from a hefty expenditure of over R600 000 that external procurement would have entailed. As a result, our budget can now be more prudently allocated to the maintenance and improvement of the existing network.

“Projects of this kind serve as valuable opportunities for the skills development of our employees, providing them with practical experience in construction medium and high voltage networks.”
