A total of 27 gravel roads across the Kouga region are set to be tarred within the next two years – forming part of the two-year R53 655 281.80 road upgrade contract.

“A whopping 4 628m of gravel road was tarred in the 2021/2022 financial year,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks. “An additional 952m of gravel road is in the process of being tarred.

“Not stopping there, some 5 797m of road will be tarred in the current financial year.”

The priority gravel roads tarred in the previous financial year include Mentoor Street, Koerat Street, and the entrance to Golf Course in Humansdorp.

Roads tarred in Jeffreys Bay are Galjoen Street, Snoek Street, and Haring Street, while roads in progress include Klipvis Street, Streepie Street, and Makriel Street.

Aweries Street, Jantjes Street, and Circle Road were tarred in Thornhill.

“A further R10 million will be spend on the resealing of roads across the Kouga region,” said Hendricks.

“The upgrading of roads not only addresses the massive gravel roads backlog in the region, but it also demonstrates the municipality’s capability of and dedication to infrastructure development.”
