A 64-year-old man has been arrested on murder charges after voluntarily surrendering to police following the fatal shooting of an elderly woman at a retirement village in Gqeberha.
According to a media statement by SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the suspect presented himself at the Kabega Park police station on Saturday morning, 23 August 2025, at approximately 09:30, where he confessed to shooting an 87-year-old woman.
Police immediately responded to the scene at Sherwood Retirement Village, where they discovered the victim’s body in her bedroom at around 10:00. The elderly woman had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
According to preliminary investigations, the shooting occurred the previous evening on Friday, 22 August 2025, at approximately 22:00. A hunting rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, has been seized by police and will undergo forensic analysis.
The suspect has been detained and is expected to appear before the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on murder charges. Police say the motive behind the attack remains unknown and forms a critical component of the ongoing investigation.
