Although Olympic Weightlifting is one of the oldest sports in the Olympic Games, the first-ever weightlifting championship was held this past weekend in Humansdorp, at the Humansdorp High School.
“The Eastern Cape Youth and Junior Championship was a great success,” says Eastern Cape Weightlifting Vice-Chairman, Curvon Jacobs.
“Four out of the current five South African Champions from the Eastern Cape competed, which added to a great day of lifting and crowd enjoyment. Weightlifters competed in their age categories, namely u/14, Youth and Junior. Every category has their winner in their weight categories, and at the end the best lifter in the weight categories gets selected via the Sinclair points calculator for the Champion of Champions trophy,” Jacobs explained.
The four Champion of Champions trophy winners on the weekend were:
- Best Male under 35kg lifter: Ruwellyn Bantom (Pellsrus)
- Best Male under 48kg lifter: Jason Hallem (Pellsrus)
- Best Male overall over 48kg lifter: Isaih Miggels (Humansdorp)
- Best Female overall: Theolien Ruiters – Pellsrus
