The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Oyster Bay – Station 36, recently had the privilege of welcoming 80 volunteers to their base where they participated in Maritime Emergency Care (MEC) training.
From May 3 to 5, paramedics Johan Loubser and Wouna du Plessis led the Maritime Emergency Care course, an advanced first aid course developed by the NSRI for crew members.
The pair expertly presented a thorough and very informative course to the volunteers from Oyster Bay, Storms River, Eersterivier, Gariep, Port Alfred, Gqeberha, Jeffreys Bay, and St Francis Bay. Relay EMS also generously offered practical training on May 4.
In a statement released by the NSRI, during the training session on May 4 they were faced with a real rescue situation, when an out-of-control veld fire threatened the town of Oyster Bay.
The fire, which initially began on May 2, was driven by a strong wind but was brought under control by May 5.
“Through quick response and amazing teamwork, a catastrophe was avoided when Working on Fire sent a spotter plane and helicopter to assist in the fight,” the statement read.
“Thank you to each and every volunteer that made this weekend an unforgettable success. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, being eager to learn, and sharpening your skills to save lives,” the statement read.
