Jeffreys Bay-based non-profit organisation, On Eagle’s Wings Multi-Purpose Centre, which provides individuals, families, and communities with a place of support, healing, and restoration to function fully and healthily, is hoping active and retired social workers will offer their volunteer services.
According to the director of On Eagle’s Wings Multi-Purpose Centre, Pastor Mercy Cwayi, the centre focuses on social justice and psycho-social support for women and children – the vulnerable groups who are increasingly the victims of abuse and neglect.
“Our mission is to be a significant roleplayer in affecting positive change related to all aspects in the lives of women and children in the Kouga region,” said Cwayi.
She said that to fulfil this mission, the services at the centre include counselling, screening and referrals, lifeskills training, mentoring, therapy camps and retreats, information-sharing workshops and awareness campaigns.
Cwayi said that the focus of the centre for this year is to increase their counselling and empowerment reach, and to provide individuals and groups with skills such as beading, sewing and mosaic work.
“It is critical that we empower vulnerable groups towards financial independence,” said Cwayi.
She said that the services they provide are free to anyone who might need them.
Cwayi further said that as an organisation they face challenges of decreased funding, while social ills continue to increase, making it more difficult to help those in need.
She said that considering these challenges, the NPO is calling on individuals, businesses and social groups who feel that they can play a role in the social upliftment of the Kouga region to please volunteer their time and skills.
“We are hoping that active or retired social workers will also consider volunteering their services at our centre,” said Cwayi.
