The Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) hosted the Genesis Fight League Chapter 3 on December 2, at the Hellenic Hall, Gqeberha, which was the pre-trials for South African selection.

At least seven fighters from Raptors Jeffreys Bay dojo and Raptors Humansdorp dojo signed up to compete; however only six were able to fight on the day.

Jeffreys Bay-based sensei, Gerhard Coetzee, said that the SA competition will take place from January 26 to 28, which will allow students to attend the GAMMA Africa Championships, and possibly the Olympics thereafter.

He said that the Genesis Fight League Chapter 3 event focused on safety and growth for the fighters, and each fight was amazing.

“The organisers, coaches, fighters, senseis, and referee were friendly and helpful from the beginning to the end, with pep talks in the locker rooms, prayers before fights, sharing gear, congratulating one another, and cheering each other on,” said Coetzee.

He said that it was also a perfect opportunity for fighters from different clubs to socialise and learn from each other. Coetzee, who was also a judge at the event, said that each fighter walked into the ring to their chosen entrance song.

“The fighters were humble and excited as they each did a fantastic job,” said Coetzee.

He said that regardless of winning or losing, they all gained so much experience.

We are extremely proud of each person who competed, as we know that it takes a lot of guts to enter the ring.

He said that their fighters would take what they have learnt to train for the next event.
