JEFFREYS BAY – Local chess talent, Justin Rishworth, has brought pride to the Kouga region and South Africa after being crowned the African Amateur Individual Chess Champion (u/1700).

His victory has also earned him the prestigious title of Candidate Master-elect, an international recognition awarded by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Rishworth described the achievement as a dream come true and expressed his gratitude to those who made it possible.

“This milestone is not mine alone. It belongs to everyone who has supported me on this journey,” said Rishworth.

He further thanked the Kouga Municipality, his father James Rishworth, his mother, Irma Pienaar, and stepfather Dougie Pienaar, Chess South Africa, and the Sedibeng Chess Union for sponsoring and assisting him in making his dream a reality.

“Without their support, this achievement would not have been possible,” said Rishworth.

He has been working tirelessly under the guidance of his coach and with the encouragement of his family, sponsors, and chess community.

Rishworth’s journey has been marked by years of dedication, countless tournaments, and the belief that hard work and perseverance can open doors to international success.

“This is only the beginning. I know there is still much work ahead, but I am excited to continue learning, growing, and representing my community and my country on the chess stage,” said Rishworth.

He joins a select few elite players from South Africa, including Grandmaster Kenny Solomon and Women’s Grandmaster-elect Jesse February, to name a few, who have ever won a continental title.

Rishworth has also qualified to represent Africa in the World Amateur Individual Chess Championship.

He was also thrilled to receive a phone call from Andre Lewaks, president of Chess South Africa, to congratulate him on his Candidate Master-elect title and tournament victory.

With this victory, Rishworth hopes to inspire young chess players in Kouga and across South Africa, proving that with commitment, the right support, and belief in one’s dreams, anything is possible.
