The newly-established Douglas Matsha People’s Association (Domapa) had 10 of their chess players participating in the Sarah Baartman District Chess Union’s Chess Tournament at Marina Martinique Hall, on September 9.
Three of the players did exceptionally well, with Zolani Sibengile making it to second place in the A- section, Yomelela Pongolo crowned the best female player, and Khazimla Mtyaleka making it to the top 10 of the B-section.
Loyiso Matsha, the club’s president, said he was impressed with the players’ progress.
“I am looking forward to them participating in the local chess union’s trials in 2024,” said Matsha.
Chess coaches for the club include Matsha and Zolani Sibengile.
To keep the momentum going, the club will host an u/12 and u/18 Schools Chess Tournament at the Humansdorp Library on October 2, from 11:00 to 14:00.
The entry fee is R50 per player and the closing date for entries is September 25.
