Kouga Municipality’s lifeguards kept their heads above water this festive season – December 15 to January 1 – as they responded to various incidents at beaches across the region.

Over this period lifeguards rescued three persons from drowning, and helped 11 people back to shore after they got into trouble. These “help-outs” occur when a swimmer can still navigate in the water, but is encountering difficulty in returning to the shore, prompting lifeguards to help.

No drownings have been recorded for this period. The lifeguards also treated various people in need of medical attention, including an 11-year-old boy who dived into rocks, and multiple blue bottle sting treatments.

Beaches were closed on various occasions due to high shark activity and poor and fogged conditions.
