THE local Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) office led the Legends Fridays campaign activation in Kareedouw on June 29.

The campaign was launched in conjunction with Koukamma Municipality, Koukamma Youth Forum, SASSA and Kareedouw Community Policing Forum.

Legends Fridays is a government initiative which calls all citizens and organisations to practise the legacy of struggle icons such as Nelson Mandela, Albertina Sisulu and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The initiative will officially be observed every last Friday of the month, but initiatives can be implemented by individuals or organisations on any Friday of the month.

People, organisations and businesses can participate by doing acts of selflessness, such as:

  • Help promote the love for education: you can buy a book for a child or assist school children with homework or exam preparations.
  • Encourage leadership and active citizenry amongst the youth: you can mentor someone.
  • Protect children’s rights and well-being: you can visit and make donations to children in need.
  • Help to reduce poverty: you can assist with skills development or assist with food garden projects and non-profit organisations.
  • Promote a value-based society by promoting culture and tradition: you can help to promote heritage and African history.
  • Promote an active and healthy lifestyle through sport: you can organise sports events or donate sports equipment.

The Legends Fridays campaign can be done by anyone in any area: selflessness can be as simple as helping a child or elderly person in your neighbourhood.

Participants can upload photos of their initiatives on social media and use these hashtags, #BeTheLegacy #Mandela100 #MaSisulu100.
