The Jeffreys Bay-based League of Former Police Officials which was established in 2007 to offer companionship and to cater for the wellbeing of all retired South African Police Service members in the Kouga region, is now encouraging officials to join their union.

Suzann Potgieter, treasurer and secretary, said that the league, formed more than 15 years ago in Jeffreys Bay, initially had a total of 27 members which has now increased to 97.

She said that the league, which stands on its motto “ad infinitum” which translates “to infinity”, aimed at promoting mutual companionship, friendship, helpfulness, and common interest among the members.

“Through the league we ensure that the special interests of our members are looked after. It is also important for us to guard over the wellbeing of our members by attending to pension and medical-related matters,” said Potgieter.

She said that it is therefore crucial that retired members keep in contact with the league, to assist in pension and medical challenges.

Potgieter said the league also provided their members with support when they are ill, and support with funeral arrangements.

She said the league, a registered non-profit organisation, has been established nationally in each province and has no connection with any state department.

The current members of the league based in Jeffreys Bay include Deon van Heerden (chairperson), Suzann Potgieter (treasurer and secretary) and additional members, Ria Brand, Moekie Davidtsz, Marieta Viljoen, Wynand van Heerden and Johan van Vuuren.

Potgieter said that the committee members meet twice quarterly to discuss the upcoming functions, while the entire team meets a minimum of four times a year for their annual meeting, year-end function, and social gatherings.

“To help more people learn about the league and their exciting gatherings, we are encouraging retired police officials in the Kouga region to join,” said Potgieter.

She said that those who are eligible to apply for membership include former members of the South African Police Force, South African Police Service, South African Railway Police, and reservists who have gone on pension, accepted a package, were boarded, or resigned honourably.

In addition, widowers or widows whose spouses have previously worked as police officials are also encouraged to join.
