After their second appearance in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on March 8, the four suspects accused of attempted murder of DA municipal Ward 4 councillor and mayoral committee member, Jaques Alexander, who was shot at in February, have abandoned their bid for bail.

The suspects are Mthumzi Lani, Lutho Mbatha, Luciano Jacobs and Athenkosi Gidane.

“The case has been remanded to April 19, for further investigation,” said Luxolo Tyali, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson commenting on the suspects abandoning their bail bid during their March 8 court appearance.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that while parking his vehicle in front of the Kouga Municipality main building in Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay, on February 29, Alexander was shot at by two suspects. This was previously reported by Kouga Express.

Naidu said that Alexander sustained multiple injuries to his back.

“Two suspects split up and ran off in different directions, but were swiftly arrested by police,” said Naidu.

She further said that two additional suspects were apprehended by Jeffreys Bay law enforcement officials, for being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

Naidu said that the four suspects were detained on charges of attempted murder.

Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said that Alexander was transported to a hospital in Gqeberha after the shooting incident, and was released four days later.
