The Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) is recognised as the most prestigious submission fighting tournament in the world, and this year Jeffreys Bay will host the ADCC Open from Saturday, July 15 to Sunday, July 16, at Mentor’s Country Estate, forming part of the J-Bay Surf Festival.
“Our ADCC South Africa tour started in 2015 and has grown significantly, producing a few South African champions that are making their mark on the world scene.
“After visiting the J-Bay festival a few years ago, I was determined to get involved. It’s a huge pleasure to be invited to such a phenomenal festival to showcase the best grappling talent we have to offer,” said George.
The ADCC Open in Jeffreys Bay will be the last stop before the ADCC Africa Championship in August, and serves as excellent preparation for novices and pros alike.
The event is expected to draw a whopping 250 competitors from around the country, with a wide range of age and weight categories catering for everyone from children to professional athletes.
South Africa’s top UFC athletes, and internationally renowned fighters, Drikus du Plessis and Cameron Saaiman are expected to attend the event. Du Plessis is a top-ranked UFC middleweight athlete who is currently ranked fifth in the world, while Saaiman is an up-and-coming athlete in the UFC Bantamweight division.
Event sponsors RVCA, Sealand and The Store have joined together to offer a R10 000 cash prize for the professional division, as well as assorted prizes such as duffel bags, moon bags and socks.
The professional divisions are expected to deliver electrifying fights, with finals taking place on July 16.
The event is open to spectators and entry is free of charge.
