MORE than 600 baby items were collected last week in a joint Nelson Mandela Day campaign by Kouga Municipality and the Fountains Mall.
Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks had called on the public to donate used or new baby clothes that would go towards vulnerable children.
The Mall’s customers contributed 409 items, which were dropped off at the Fountains, while municipal staff weighed in with 209 of their own donations at the Jeffreys Bay main office.
Hendricks said the municipality and Mall were busy identifying organisations and homes that care for vulnerable children and orphans so that the clothes could be handed over to them.
“I would like to pass a heartfelt thank you to all who came out and gave towards this good cause. The clothes will make a big and much-needed difference to the babies.
“Our staff led by example in showing that they too care and I would like to applaud them for that,” he said.
The Mayor had more words of gratitude for Fountains Mall which he said did not hesitate to join the programme.
“It is always encouraging to see stakeholders from our private sector taking part in community development initiatives such as this one and we hope there will be more partnerships of this nature going forward,” he said.
A variety of clothing was dona-ted, ranging from newborn sizes to clothes for two-year olds.
