JEFFREYS BAY – It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a community to raise funds.

Stulting Primary School and Dirk Ellis Volkswagen have embarked on an exciting fundraising journey to restore the school’s Volkswagen Kombi to its full glory through a crowdfunding campaign.

This VW Kombi was ‘born’ in 1976, and just a year later, it found its new home at Stulting Primary School in Humansdorp. The Kombi was purchased for R4,000 from Jo de La Mot Motors – the then Volkswagen dealer in Humansdorp.

Stulting School Principal, Cornelius Coetzer, explained the legacy of their ‘people mover’: “The Kombi has been in the service of teachers and learners of Stulting Primary School since 1977, and for five decades, the Kombi has transported generations of children and created everlasting memories.”

Coetzer elaborated, “But time has taken its toll, and our beloved Kombi needs tender loving care. With its 50th birthday around the corner, it’s time to give it new life.”

Last year, Coetzer approached Dirk Ellis Volkswagen about the possibility of sponsorship to restore the bus, and this compelling collaboration was tabled. Dirk Ellis Volkswagen Marketing Manager, Werner van Wyk, stated: “With the legendary Kombi being a part of the school and the community for so many years, the thought was to get the community involved to assist in raising the funds needed. After all, Volkswagen is the people’s car.”

Although the project was idle for nearly a year, the ‘BackaBussie’ campaign is now in full motion – just in time for the icon’s upcoming 50th birthday milestone.

Van Wyk further commented: “This collective effort will not only raise the necessary funds but will also strengthen community bonds and turn this restoration project into a powerful symbol of collaboration and positive change.”
