Global Leadership Academy’s First Rugby Team faced Nico Malan High School for the second time this season on 14 August, in what proved to be another competitive and spirited encounter.

GLA secured a 49-29 victory — a notable progression from their first meeting earlier this year, when GLA achieved their first-ever win over Nico Malan’s Fourth Team by 11-6.

The result is a testament to the steady upward trajectory of GLA rugby.

For the second consecutive year, the school has fielded both a junior and senior team, navigating the highs and lows that come with building a rugby programme.

Under the guidance of coaches, Aubrey Kubayi, Sterrenberg Smith and Eduard Conradie, the players have developed growing confidence and resilience.

The 2025 season has been a strong one for the First Team, with many wins and close-fought losses.

Two of their toughest challenges came against the respected Nico Malan Fourth Team — a side steeped in rugby tradition.

Remarkably, GLA not only achieved their first victory over this team but managed to do it twice in one season.

Principal Stefan Kleyn said that the school is grateful for the invaluable support of sponsors, whose investment in their sportswear has boosted both morale and pride on the field.

“The commitment from sponsors helps our players represent GLA with pride,” said Kleyn.

As the 2025 season draws to a close, the school recognises a squad of well-rounded, determined players who — with continued leadership and support — are laying the foundations of a rugby legacy for GLA.

With both junior and senior teams showing strong promise, the school is well-positioned for an even stronger 2026 season.
