JEFFREYS BAY – A generous donation from a Bloemfontein visitor is set to strengthen the ongoing efforts of local non-profit organisation Jeffreys Bay Dorp van Drome to maintain and beautify public spaces in the town.
During December 2025, volunteer Sue Kitchener was in contact with a man (who chooses to stay anonymous) from Bloemfontein who was staying at his holiday home in Jeffreys Bay. With a background in horticulture, he showed interest in learning more about the work of the organisation.
Kitchener said that Dorp van Drome is a voluntary NPO focused on beautifying public spaces with plants and maintaining town gardens where the Kouga Municipality is unable to do so regularly.
This includes close collaboration with the municipality for planning and service delivery.
She further explained that due to Jeffreys Bay being a water-scarce area, the organisation prioritises indigenous, water-wise plants instead of an abundance of flowering varieties, as regular watering is not feasible.
“After visiting several of the gardens maintained by Dorp van Drome, he expressed satisfaction with their neat and well-kept appearance,” said Kitchener.
During a conversation with the visitor, she mentioned some of the challenges the organisation faced and that their existing water trailer was also broken and unusable.
Following this, the visitor suggested he might have a second-hand trailer in Bloemfontein that could be used, provided the organisation could install a water container.
In February this year, he contacted Kitchener to confirm that he would donate the trailer.
She said that he generously delivered it to Jeffreys Bay in March and agreed to cover the costs of repairing rust patches and having it fully spray-painted.
“Dorp van Drome is very grateful for this exceptional generosity, and it will allow us to continue moving forward with a positive attitude to sustain the beauty and nature in Jeffreys Bay,” said Kitchener.
She said that the versatile trailer will be used both as a water tanker and for transporting larger loads of garden cuttings, significantly improving the organisation’s operational capacity.
