PATENSIE – A fourth high-mast light was erected in Weston in Patensie on Friday, 30 January 2026, as part of Kouga Local Municipality’s ongoing public lighting and safety programme for the 2025/26 financial year.

This installation forms part of a broader rollout of 11 high-mast lights planned for year one of the project, with locations identified across various wards based on priority needs for public security lighting.

The newly erected mast will complement the three existing high-mast lights already installed in Weston, further enhancing nighttime visibility and contributing to improved safety and security for residents.

Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the project reflects the municipality’s commitment to creating safer communities through targeted infrastructure investment.

“Public lighting plays a critical role in improving safety and giving residents greater peace of mind,” said Bornman. “This high-mast light, together with others being rolled out across the municipality, demonstrates our focus on responding to ward-level priorities and ensuring that communities benefit directly from infrastructure funding.”

Once installation is complete, the high-mast light will become operational immediately.

The lighting system operates on an automatic day/night photocell switch, activating at night and switching off again at sunrise without the need for manual intervention.

The high-mast lighting programme is being implemented over a two-year period and is funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).

Funding allocated for the first year of the project (2025/26) amounts to R7 million, with an additional R5 million earmarked for the second year (2026/27).

Bornman added that the municipality remains committed to equitable service delivery across all wards.

“We are using available grant funding responsibly to improve basic services such as lighting, which has a direct impact on the quality of life of our residents,” he said.

The project extends beyond Weston, with additional high-mast lights planned in other communities. Positions for seven more high-mast lights in year two of the rollout are still to be finalised.
