A four-legged K9 officer managed to track down two of the
eight suspects and also sniffed out 429 abalone hidden in the bushes in
Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay on December 1.
According to police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli, on
Tuesday at about 03:00, members of the Jeffreys Bay Stock Theft and Endangered
Species Unit were conducting an operation on the beach in Jeffreys Bay when
they spotted six suspicious men.
“The six men were found in possession of diving equipment
and were arrested immediately. The police then searched for the remaining two
suspects who ran into the nearby bushes,” said Nkohli.
He said their four-legged K9 officer, Max (six-year-old
German Shepherd) attached to the Humansdorp K9 Unit was dispatched to search
for the suspects.
“Moments later, Max managed to track down the two suspects
who were hiding in the bushes and also recovered 429 abalone stashed in four
bags,” said Nkohli.
He further said police nabbed the eight men and also seized
a white bakkie for further investigation.
Nkohli said the suspects, aged between 21 and 40, are due to
appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court today, on charges of illegal
possession of abalone.
