THE International Federation of Environmental Health declared September 26 as World Environmental Health Day, to be celebrated across the globe every year.
This year’s theme was: Glo-bal Food Safety and Sustainability.
Community Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson said the main aim of the training was to support the provision of nutritious and safe food, as well as potable water.
“We also wanted to encou-rage communities to value su-stainable food production.
“We decided to target caterers, mainly because they make and provide food for members of the public at large,” Benson said.
The caterers were trained on food safety and food-borne illnesses such as listeriosis.
They were also trained on the dangers of counterfeit food and personal hygiene.
Benson said food safety was increasingly under threat because of various factors, stemming from production and preparation methods.
About thirty caterers were trained on the day.
