FIVE local Assistant Chef students recently had a valuable training experience in the bustling kitchen of the Infood Bakery and Deli.

These students took part in one of JBay Technical College’s recent initiatives aimed at developing local unemployed youth, by providing them with the skills and experiences necessary to succeed in the field of hospitality.

The college’s dedication to community development is further strengthened by its partnership with the Amandla Omoya Trust and Enke: Make Your Mark. This collaboration focuses on the Pushin’Progress initiative, a holistic development six-month programme designed to enhance the prospects of young people and help them make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Jayne Davies, owner of Infood Bakery and Deli welcomed five students, Ivano Coenraad, Silwano Swartbooi, Gemore Kettledas, Yolanda Maseti, and Dyren Babana, into her kitchen for a three-week immersive experience.

“The students surprised me. They were not afraid to put their heads down and do the tasks we asked of them. They were thirsty for knowledge and listened very well. A lovely experience all round to have them in our workspace,” said Davies.

Under the expert guidance of Erenskia Gouws, the students were exposed to various kitchen environments, including Bakery, Confectionery, Hot Kitchen, Cold Kitchen, Front of House, and Scullery. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their culinary skills but also fostered a deeper understanding of their roles within a professional kitchen.

JBay Technical College invites all unemployed youth to explore the opportunities available through their programmes and to enquire about bursaries available.
