AFTER hosting a successful inaugural Coastal Elite Boran Auction on April 27 at Vygieskraal Farm in Jeffreys Bay, the event is expected to be hosted annually. The auction resulted in a turnover of R3.5 million for 11 Eastern Cape cattle breeders.
As previously reported by Kouga Express ahead of the event on April 27, Eastern Cape breeder, Stephnus Scheepers, said that although the Boran Auction is hosted throughout the country, this was the first Coastal Elite Boran Auction, which was a great success.
He said they initially had a total of 52 stud cattle for sale, but after the screening of the cattle was concluded it was discovered that only 46 stud cattle, five of which were bulls, and 41 female cows, were eligible for the auction. To his surprise, Scheepers said that although they were expecting 140 potential buyers to attend the event and 46 bidders on Meerkat, an online auction platform, they had over 200 in-person bidders at the Vygieskraal Farm, and 64 people registered to bid online.
“The event was a great success, and we were able to sell all our cattle. We also had a great deal of positive feedback from those who attended the event, and more people were interested in joining Boran as breeders,” said Scheepers.
He said that since they were able to sell all 46 cattle, turnover from the auction was R3.5 million. Scheepers said that at least 12 cattle were sold to an online bidder based in Zimbabwe. In addition to the success of the auction, he said that the community of Jeffreys Bay had benefited greatly, as people attending the auction made use of local accommodation and restaurants.
“The breeders would like to thank everyone who attended the event, and participated in the auction. We value your support,” said Scheepers.
