THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Assisi in Humansdorp experienced a dramatic increase in stray animals and unwanted pets being dropped off at their premises.

Louisa Bakkes, the SPCA’s Vice-chairperson, said from the end of October last year until the end of December, the non-profit organisation had seen a 100% increase in the number of animals brought to them – testing their limited resources to the maximum.

“Some were left abandoned in boxes at the gate,” said Bakkes. “Others were brought in by distraught owners after the mother was killed and not knowing what to do with the offspring other than to surrender them to the SPCA.

“Then there are the once-loved pets who have been discarded to make space for a new pet.

“And those left abandoned while the owners are on holiday, or some even emigrating.”

According to her, the increase can, furthermore, be contributed to the tough economic times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to unsterilised animals which tend to breed uncontrollably.

“Although the SPCA has limited resources, we urge residents to not dump their animals or to give them away – rather bring them to us,” said Bakkes.

“We accept all animals, regardless of age, breed or size.”

Save a life

Filled to capacity, the SPCA Assisi is currently home to over 50 dogs and cats – all looking for a loving home of their own.

“We evaluate each animal and take into consideration the animal’s age, temperament, behaviour and health in order to determine which animal will be made available for adoption,” said Bakkes.

“Should they have severe medical or behavioural conditions – such that they are unsafe to rehome or have needs beyond what we can treat or rehabilitate – the option of euthanasia is then taken by a qualified team of experts.

“The reality is that there are not enough homes for the thousands of animals admitted to the SPCA throughout the year,” she said. “We need to educate and, most important, sterilise.”

The adoption fee is R1 000 for a dog and R600 for a cat. This includes sterlilisation, a microchip and the first inoculation.

More information

The SPCA is, furthermore, in need of volunteers to walk, and socialise with the dogs and cats that are waiting to be adopted, as well as to bath them. They also need a reliable garden service, a patient photographer and financial support to keep their vehicles on the road.

“A thank you to everyone who has been kind, grateful and compassionate,” said Bakkes.

“Your kind words, smiles and donations have been much appreciated.”
