CELEBRATING South Africa Library Week, Democratic Alliance Councillor Henni Britz conducted unannounced oversight visits to various libraries within the Sarah Baartman District Municipality’s jurisdiction from March 19 to 25.
Apart from inspecting the facilities to ascertain whether local government provide residents with the necessary services, Britz wanted to create awareness among residents and promote library week.
“I was impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of the librarians and their commitment to serve residents – even under difficult circumstances,” says Britz.
“Although all libraries are equipped with computers, none of them has access to the internet or Wi-Fi services. This hampers librarians from assisting learners with school projects. Where possible, they make copies of articles for learners from at times outdated literature.
“In several instances, libraries do not receive daily newspapers, and librarians sometimes buy these out of their own pockets.”
To address these issues, Britz tabled a list of questions during a recent Council meeting of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality. Focus was especially placed on the provision of internet and Wi-Fi services to libraries throughout the district.
According to Britz, Acting Municipal Manager Riaaz Lorgat did not provide answers to any of the questions tabled. However, he did undertake to provide answers at the next council meeting this month.
“I will report back to my constituents once answers are provided. I will work tirelessly until all libraries are equipped with internet and Wi-Fi services,” says Britz. “Access to knowledge is an essential basic service.”
