EASTERN CAPE – The Eastern Cape has launched a ground-breaking initiative to strengthen environmental collaboration and sustainability across the province.

The Eastern Cape Sustainability Forum (ECSF) is set to bring together conservationists, environmental practitioners, and key stakeholders from various sectors to address pressing ecological challenges and capitalise on opportunities in the green economy.

“Provincial role-players in conservation, water security, biodiversity, natural resource management, and the green and marine economies need a collaborative public platform to interact, share knowledge, and focus on ecological sustainability and resilience,” says Cobus Meiring, from the ECSF Secretariat.

“The establishment of the ECSF is a critical step towards achieving this.”

Following consultations with stakeholders from the environmental and agricultural sectors, the need for a united provincial response to the growing green economy and climate change was made evident.

The ECSF, as a result, was created to provide a coordinated platform that will focus on key areas such as land restoration, the wildlife economy, and protecting natural infrastructure such as river systems, wetlands, estuaries, and marine ecosystems.

“These key focus areas are crucial for conserving biodiversity, sustaining livelihoods, and building the resilience of local economies,” explains Meiring.

“The Eastern Cape is uniquely positioned to benefit from such a platform, thanks to its wealth of resources, including specialised agencies like Gamtoos Water, strong government involvement, and leading academic institutions such as Nelson Mandela University. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, we can create opportunities for strategic partnerships and coordinated action.”

To support its objectives, the ECSF will host an Annual Climate Change and Environmental Indaba, alongside industry-focused workshops and media initiatives.

These activities aim to promote dialogue, build capacity, and exchange best practices to enhance ecological stewardship and develop climate adaptation strategies.

“By fostering collaboration and innovation, the ECSF will play a pivotal role in environmental governance and unlocking the potential of the green economy,” says Meiring.

“It is an essential step for building resilience and ensuring sustainable development in one of South Africa’s most ecologically rich provinces.”

Interested organisations and practitioners are encouraged to join the ECSF stakeholder database by submitting their details to louisamare@gmail.com.

The forum aims to act as a catalyst for shared knowledge, strategic integration, and impactful environmental action across the province.
