A totalof 16 arrests were made, and 471 fines amounting to R459 000 were issued during joint safety operations, including three roadblocks, in Kouga over the festive season.
Among these fines, a total of R50 100 accounted for 68 public transport-related offences.
The primary offences were related to drivers not possessing a driver’s licence – 136 cases. It is important to note that this does not necessarily imply motorists were without a licence, rather they did not have it in their possession at the time.
At the number two spot were unlicensed motor vehicles –84. This was followed by not wearing a seatbelt (53), lamps and lights not working (38), and overloading of passengers (36).
Other offences include not stopping at a stop sign – 10, unroadworthy tyres – 9, operating a cell phone while driving – 9, and no professional driving permit – 8.
Some 16 drivers were arrested for drinking and driving.
Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman, praised the collaborative efforts of Kouga’s law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of residents and visitors.
“They exceeded expectations in their dedication to ensuring the safety of motorists during the recent festive season,” said Bornman. “We appreciate the collaborative spirit.
“Together we can make Kouga a safe place for all.”
