JEFFREYS BAY – The mats were buzzing and the crowd electric as Botha’s Kickboxing Academy stormed the Eden Championships in George on 16 August, delivering a performance that turned heads and raised eyebrows.
With just five fighters in tow, a mix of juniors and seniors, the academy walked away with a medal count that would make any coach beam: four golds, two silvers, and a handful of bronzes.
From the first bell, it was clear these athletes were not just there to participate. They came to dominate.
Sensei Phillip van Zyl carved his way to gold in points and clinched silver in Light Continuous.
Ricky Humphreys was unstoppable, grabbing double gold like it was second nature.
Theon van Niekerk, Christiaan Grobler and Callihuano Frazenburg each added their own shine to the tally, proving that talent runs deep in this tight-knit squad.
Shihan Louwrens Botha, the academy’s founder, said, “Well done to my five students who participated in the Eden Championships in George. We’ve got four gold medals and two silver medals.”
“Thank you so much to Coach Borries and all the moms and dads who supported us. Thank you to Shihan Natasha Crous and the Eden Kickboxing Club for hosting the event.”
The venue pulsed with energy as fighters from across the region clashed in fast-paced bouts, each round a blur of footwork, timing, and sheer willpower.
Spectators cheered as underdogs rose, favourites fell, and medals were earned by each kickboxer the hard way.
Next up? Botha’s Kickboxing Academy Tournament on 6 September.
The Eastern Cape Kickboxing (ECKA) trials will also be held on the same day.
With clubs from across the province gearing up, it promises to be another high-octane showdown.
For those itching to trade sneakers for shin guards and join the action, Botha’s Kickboxing Academy is open to new members.
