The Eastern Province Coastal Touchies Association (EPCTA) is gearing up to host their inaugural Eastern Cape Touch Rugby Tournament on June 16, at Victory Christian School (VCS) in Jeffreys Bay. This is a significant milestone in the promotion and development of touch rugby in the province.
According to Razaan Ogle, communication and marketing manager of EPCTA, the tournament is open to both primary and secondary schools throughout the Eastern Cape.
She said that the event will cater for both male and female divisions.
“With the main objective of introducing touch rugby within schools and establishing a foundation for future fixtures, this event aims at igniting a passion for the sport among young athletes,” said Ogle.
She said that EPRU has thrown its weight behind the initiative to highlight the importance of touch rugby in school sports.
Ogle said that EPRU representatives would be at the tournament which will further underscore the significance of the event.
“The tournament not only presents an opportunity for schools to highlight their skills, but also serves as a platform for players to gain valuable experience and grow,” said Ogle.
She said that in celebration of Youth Day, EPCTA has organised cash prizes, trophies, and medals to honour and commemorate the young talents.
Ogle said that the incentive further adds to the excitement and raises the stakes for participating schools.
She said that the historic tournament promises a day filled with exhilarating matches and the showcasing of skills as schools from the Kouga region and the greater Eastern Cape vie for the title of Eastern Province School Touch Rugby Champions.
“Even though the tournament will take place in Kouga, the event is the championships for touch rugby in the entire Eastern Cape with schools throughout the province participating to be crowned the school champions,” said Ogle. She said the tournament’s commitment to accessibility is what sets it apart.
Ogle said that the event is free of charge and open to all schools, emphasising inclusivity and encouraging mass participation.
“EPCTA is eagerly looking forward to welcoming all players to the tournament. Together, let us champion the development of touch rugby and support our youth,” said Ogle.
She said that to address any concerns or uncertainties schools may have regarding the game regulations or gameplay itself, EPCTA is offering valuable assistance through their knowledgeable coaches.
Ogle said that schools interested in participating are encouraged to contact EPCTA and take advantage of the support offered by their association to ensure a smooth and enjoyable participation experience.
She said that registration for the tournament will close on June 2 and schools are urged to seize the opportunity and secure their place in the thrilling Touch Rugby Tournament.
“EPCTA extends a warm invitation to all supporters, spectators, and the community to join us on this momentous day. Your presence will undoubtedly enhance the electric atmosphere and contribute to the celebration of our youth. Let us unite as a community and rally behind the growth of touch rugby at the school level,” said Ogle.
She said that delectable food stalls would be accessible and the entrance fees are R10 for cars, R10 for adults and R5 for children.
The tournament will start at 08:00.
